CEO Today UK Awards 2021

Supporting customers throughout the pandemic In the Medical Devices sector we are in a unique position – our regular day-to-day interaction with healthcare professionals and hospital managers right across the UK & Ireland means that we’re able to listen to our healthcare colleagues and hear the challenges they are facing. Listening to some of the stories from doctors and nurses on the frontline has, at times, been truly harrowing. From conversations with senior NHS and Government officials over the last 12 months, I’ve heard first-hand how bleak the situation has been for many services, with hospitals facing acute capacity pressures like never before. We have a responsibility to support healthcare systems with solutions in any way that we can. When PPE shortages were the challenge last year, we mobilised to donate thousands of coveralls, googles, aprons and hand & face creams to the frontline, as well as offering our clinical staff extended time off to volunteer on the frontline. We radically adapted our educational offering, taking advice from clinicians on where training support was required. When the pandemic eased in late summer, we focused on how we could support with the return to elective surgery, launching our Covid-19 Recovery Packages focused on waiting list management, process improvement and reconfiguration; as well as working with PanSurg, from Imperial College London, to host Live Peer Reviews to discuss and produce white papers on best practice in the return to surgery. We began 2021 by focusing on where our help was most needed as we hit another peak - supporting with workforce support for redeployment, training & education, project support for vaccination hubs or relocated clinical services, planning and logistics as well as capacity management. As the pressure on services eases, we are primed ready to support in whatever way we can. We know that growing surgical waiting lists need reducing, and it will be necessary to find ways to work more efficiently, to increase surgical throughput, to improve patient outcomes while reducing length of stay. We are committed to working with hospitals across the UK & Ireland to address these challenges. Supporting employees Throughout the pandemic, it’s certainly been front of my mind as a leader that we need to support all of our colleagues more than ever. It’s been such an extended period of tough times for staff and this can of course lead to mental health challenges. For me, creating an open culture where people are not afraid to ask for help and know that they are encouraged to focus on their health and wellbeing has been key. We’ve seen more than ever before how crucial it is that we all support each other, share helpful resources for wellbeing and of course maintain flexibility to make work and home life as smooth as it can be. As a company, we are committed to enabling employees to bring their best self to work every day. Our Credo is the foundation for this and sets out how we will treat our customers, employees and the community. In practice, this means employees are given a considerable portfolio of options around flexible working, physical health and mental health. Employees can choose from an array and pick what is right for their circumstances. Firm Profile We encourage employee-led resource groups to identify what diverse options and forums our employees need and want. And in this way, we empower employees to form the future of the company. The result is that benefits go beyond hitting the standard physical and mental benefit targets. They encompass inclusivity, education and peer- to-peer support groups as well. We are really proud of those initiatives. They underline that we are an inclusive employer and that we believe in the power of diversity. We continue to challenge ourselves on what it means to prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion in every business decision we make. We leverage our DE&I strategy, policies, programs and culture of belonging to provide our workforce the support and opportunities they need to help create a healthier, more equitable world. It’s this culture that has seen our company consistently recognised as one of Britain’s Best Places to Work, named one of Britain’s Healthiest Companies and in 2020 saw us awarded as an Outstanding Employer in the BAME Investing in Ethnicity Awards. We know that bringing our diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives together drives innovation. Enabling everyone within the company to perform at their best while being themselves is fundamental to our continued success.
