www.ceotodaymagazine.com 82 CEO Today United Kingdom Awards 2018 MACHINERY PETER ALLEN Managing Director of Vollmer ABOUT PETER ALLEN Now celebrating 20 years at the Vollmer Group, Peter joined the UK subsidiary of the company in 1998 as a target driven sales manager that frequently exceeded all expectations. Rewarded for his efforts, Peter was promoted to Managing Director of Vollmer UK in 2006 and has been in this position for 12 years. Reporting directly to the Vollmer Group CEO, Peter is responsible for a team of 11 staff and driving KPIs throughout material, service, finance, HR, admin and sales operations. Delivering consistent growth in what is not only a challenging manufacturing sector, but also delivering a niche product offering within the industry; Peter proudly achieved profitability through the difficult 2009 recession through adopting smart strategic approaches. Peter has combined innovative strategic methods with methodologies learnt through a psychology degree to develop team environments built upon mutual trust, respect and motivation. Once again recognised for his commitment to the business and continually breaking the boundaries of success, Peter was offered the position of CEO of Vollmer North America & Canada, taking on the new challenge at end of 2012. Taking charge of potentially the Vollmer Group’s largest market, Peter also retained his position of Managing Director of Vollmer UK. Since taking charge of Vollmer North America, the business turnover has more than doubled in six years. Peter has also increased staff from 17 to 26 and is now overseeing construction of a new facility that will more than double the existing floor area. Set for completion at the end of 2019, Peter says the new facility will secure new and existing business for the next generation whilst underpinning the Vollmer Group’s vision to build upon its relentless commitment to service and growth. Peter has achieved all this in the USA whilst simultaneously increasing sales and turnover in the UK, some 3,000 miles away. Leading by example, Peter’s strategic insight, enthusiasm and professionalism is not only well proven and recognised on two continents, it is infectious among his staff. This ability to develop a true team ethos is what has positioned Peter and the Vollmer Group as the benchmark in niche manufacturing industry sectors. FIRM PROFILE Founded in 1909 by Heinrich Vollmer, the German Company developed the very first industrial saw setting and filing machines. Over the last 100 years, the company has focused on delivering the maximum sharpness of cutting tools and saw blades to industry. The Vollmer Group’s expertise in the production and sharpening of saw blades and cutting tools for application with machine tools, band saws, circular saws and rotary tools is unrivalled. The Company headquarters are in Biberach, Germany with further production sites in Mörlenbach, Germany and Taicang, China. Vollmer now has 14 subsidiaries and more than 30 agents all over the world to ensure customer proximity and consistently high quality levels of support. Now, the Vollmer Group employs more than 850 staff worldwide, all of whom are sharpening Heinrich Vollmer’s vision. With particular emphasis on Peter Allen’s two subsidiaries, the Vollmer Group founded the USA subsidiary in 1976 and the UK division in 1980. When the UK subsidiary was formed, it was initially opened as a subcontract sharpening service as well as a machine sales division, later dropping the manufacturing and re-grind service as a potential conflict of interest with machine purchasing customers. As technology has evolved from pneumatic and hydraulic machinery to the modern day automated computer numerically controlled (CNC) technology, both the UK and USA subsidiaries have enjoyed continual and sustained growth and staff retention, even through the most challenging economic climates. The next chapter for the Vollmer Group will continue the theme of innovation with facets of automation, precision, Industry 4.0 and Smart Device friendly machine shop management all at the fore.
