The Helix continues to be a Top 10 Free Attraction in Scotland and Callendar House recently won Best Tourist Attraction at the Scottish Hospitality Awards and gained 5-Star Historic House status from Visit Scotland. With a turnover of £19.01m, and 493 employees at the end of March 2018, Falkirk Community Trust continues to grow, strengthen and provide inspiring activities and opportunities for its citizens. ABOUT MAUREEN CAMPBELL Maureen Campbell is Chief Executive of Falkirk Community Trust, a not-for-profit organisation that manages and operates a range of community-facing sport, recreation, arts, heritage and library services in the Falkirk area. Since she joined the Trust in 2011, Maureen’s remit has been to support community aspirations, deliver inspiring services and ensure that the experiences offered provide equality of opportunity and access for all citizens of the area. Under her leadership the Trust has achieved significant increases in funding and visitor numbers and a substantial reduction in reliance on Council income. Maureen was previously Director of Community Services at Falkirk Council where she led the area’s economic regeneration programme “My Future’s in Falkirk” and implemented the Culture & Leisure Strategy. Maureen was an integral part of the “The Helix” project, which won £25 million in the Living Landmarks Lottery programme to transform the landscape between Falkirk and Grangemouth and secure continued community engagement. Prior to this, Maureen was Falkirk’s Head of Leisure Services and has held roles in the sport and recreation sector. Despite the challenges of austerity in public sector financing, Maureen has led with a calm, considered approach to achieve a vast number of improvements in the organisations managed by the Trust. Since 2013-14 the team has achieved a 37% increase in total attendances at Trust venues, a 158% increase in Trust volunteers and a 25% increase in customer income. Key highlights for 2017-18 are equally impressive. Maureen has established business growth groups to develop income-generating projects, secured £516,000 from competitive grant-making bodies and made successful bids for project funds of over £1million. Like many public sector leaders, Maureen has led the delivery of more with less. Developing services in this context is challenging and it takes realism, drive and relentless belief that purposeful development will continually evolve services for the better. Maureen’s most important trait as a leader is her self-awareness: recognising her own strengths and weaknesses. She has built a strong team around her with complementary skills whilst encouraging reflective practice as a norm. Maureen’s success can be linked to her ability to articulate a vision, set a direction and generate momentum with the team to get things done. Simple principles of Aim-Plan- Do-Review, and effective partnership working applied consistently, are at the heart of the continuous improvement in the organisation. Maureen is passionate about sport and health, and their benefits for individuals and communities. A former international swimmer, she retains a strong involvement in swimming through Board membership of Scottish Swimming, British Swimming and Commonwealth Games Scotland. Maureen’s priority is leading Falkirk Community Trust into a sustainable and successful future and she is excited about the next stage of development. With more scrutiny than ever on local authority budgets and greater pressure on trusts to deliver, her focus is clear: to continue to develop an innovative culture that drives market- and product-growth strategies.
